Sweden will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of 2023

Every six months one of the EU member states holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, also known as the Council of Ministers. Sweden will hold the Presidency during the first half of 2023.

During the six months, the Riksdag will arrange eight conferences at which members of parliament and officials from the national parliaments of the EU member states and the European Parliament will participate and discuss various issues.

The national parliaments' part in the arrangements during the EU Presidency is referred to as the parliamentary dimension of the presidency.

18–19 June: Conference on democracy in Europe

The Committee on the Constitution will host a conference on the theme “Democracy in Europe”. The general theme for the conference will be how the parliamentarians can contribute to safeguarding and strengthening democracy and the rule of law. 

The conference will be held in the Former Second Chamber of the Riksdag on 18–19 June.

A plenary meeting of COSAC is held every six months. Every national parliament and the European Parliament participate in the plenary meeting with up to six members. The Chair of the Committee on EU Affairs will host the plenary meeting at the Riksdag.

The situation in Ukraine – one of several issues discussed at the Plenary Meeting of COSAC

On 14–16 May, the Riksdag organised the Plenary Meeting of the LXIX COSAC. During the conference, members of the national parliaments’ EU affairs committees and members of the European Parliament met to discuss current EU issues.
