Meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol – JPSG Europol
The Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, is also referred to as JPSG Europol. The JPSG scrutinises how Europol performs its duties. The 12th meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol will be held on 26–27 March in the Former Second Chamber of the Riksdag.
Date: 26– 27 March
Location: The Former Second Chamber of the Riksdag, Stockholm
Europol's activities and cross-border organised crime on the agenda
JPSG Europol comprises members of the relevant committees from the national parliaments of the EU and the European Parliament. Europol's activities and police cooperation in Europe in order to combat serious and organised crime are topics for discussion during the meetings. Invited speakers can include Europol's Executive Director, the European Data Protection Supervisor and the European Commissioner for Home Affairs.
In order to carry out its scrutiny, JPSG Europol can access various documents and interview leading officials. JPSG Europol is also to be consulted when Europol's multiannual programme planning is drawn up. JPSG Europol can also summarise general conclusions regarding the political monitoring of Europol’s activities, including recommendations to Europol which are non-binding. Such conclusions are submitted to the European Parliament, the national parliaments and to EU institutions for their information.
JPSG Europol meets twice a year and the meetings are chaired jointly by the presiding parliament and the European Parliament. Each national parliament participates at the meeting with up to four members whilst the European Parliament may have up to 16 members. The meeting in Stockholm will be chaired by the Head of the Delegation of the Riksdag to JPSG Europol, together with co-chairs from the European Parliament. The Riksdag appoints a delegation to JPSG Europol for an electoral period, i.e. four years.
