Democracy and the rule of law on the agenda when the Riksdag hosts the interparliamentary conference on democracy in Europe
On 18–19 June, the Riksdag will host an interparliamentary conference on democracy in Europe. During the conference, primarily members from the EU’s national parliaments and the European Parliament will meet to discuss democracy and the rule of law.

The interparliamentary conference on democracy in Europe will be held within the framework of the Riksdag’s part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union - the parliamentary dimension. The conference is the eighth and final conference hosted by the Riksdag within the framework for the parliamentary dimension of the Swedish Presidency.
Democracy and the rule of law will be the focus of the conference
The conference will be led by Ida Karkiainen (Social Democratic Party), Chair of the Committee on the Constitution, and Erik Ottoson (Moderate Party), Deputy Chair of the Committee on the Constitution.
“The overall theme of the conference will be how we as parliamentarians can contribute to safeguarding and strengthening democracy”, says Ida Karkiainen.
“Part of the conference will focus on the democratic dialogue. Another part will be about the importance of safeguarding the independence of the courts and public trust in society’s institutions”, says Erik Ottoson.
The Riksdag is arranging eight conferences during the EU Presidency
Sweden is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January–June 2023. Within the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Presidency, the Riksdag is arranging eight conferences and meetings during this period, in which members of the national parliaments of the EU member states and of the European Parliament participate and discuss various matters. The conferences are part of continuing cooperation between the parliaments, also known as interparliamentary cooperation in the EU. All conferences that are arranged by the Riksdag are available to view on demand via the Riksdag webcast service.
