The SECG is being held within the framework of the Riksdag’s part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union – the parliamentary dimension. It is one of the recurring conferences arranged every six months by the parliament of the country holding the Presidency. The conference held during the spring is organised together with the European Parliament.

Economic governance and current challenges for the EU in focus

The agenda includes a discussion on the review of the EU economic governance framework and the fiscal challenges of increased remote working in the EU. On Monday, several interparliamentary committee meetings will also be held, among other things, on policy responses to high inflation, the impact of the decreasing use of cash, and financial support to Ukraine and the role of the national parliaments.

Speakers will include Stefan Ingves, former Governor of the Bank of Sweden (Riksbank) and Lars Heikensten, Chair of the Swedish Fiscal Policy Council.

From the Riksdag, the Speaker Andreas Norlén will participate, and will be opening the conference together with President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. Other participants from the Riksdag include Edward Riedl (Moderate Party), Chair of the Committee on Finance, Niklas Karlsson (Social Democratic Party), Chair of the Committee on Taxation and Björn Wiechel (Social Democratic Party), member of the Committee on Finance.

“It is important that we meet to find common solutions to current economic problems in Europe,” says Edward Riedl (Moderate Party), Chair of the Committee on Finance.

“Today, an increasing number of people are also working in a different country than the one in which their workplace is located. This raises questions about what country tax should be paid in,” says Niklas Karlsson (Social Democratic Party), Chair of the Committee on Taxation.
